Access to quality healthcare has been another critical issue I’ve worked to address. Growing up in rural Bihar, I saw firsthand how families struggled to access basic medical services. The nearest healthcare facilities were often far away, and the cost of treatment was prohibitive for many. The shortage of trained medical professionals was also a major barrier to care. In 2019, I became deeply involved with Madhubani Medical College, which offers an MBBS program and is attached to a 600-bed hospital providing affordable treatment. With consultation fees as low as Rs 30 and room charges just Rs 150 per day, the hospital aims to make quality healthcare accessible to everyone. But this initiative is about more than just addressing immediate needs; it’s about building a self-sustaining healthcare infrastructure that can serve future generations of Biharis.

For Bihar to truly prosper, modernization of its infrastructure is essential. This includes building reliable roads, improving transportation networks, and upgrading utilities. It could be something enchanting. I made the mistake of seeing "Valentino". Poor Rudi Nureyev. He is really quite good but the director should be shot at dawn and hung on the nearest lamppost. No taste, no talent no respect for the era., an outrageous sham which switches from high camp to slapstick and played as if everyone in the audience was deaf. Bitterly dissapointing. Maybe if I took dope I could swallow some of these new directors because they obviously do. I was amused by the car advertisement, particularly as I never owned a Mercedes nor any car in California, I always rented one! The premature announcement of the poetry readings caused the press to exaggerate their importance somewhat, as usual. But It will be a few days in February and the beginning of March, the same kind of thing as in Edinburgh. The article I read made it sound as though I was joining the Royal Shakespeare Co. (as if they'd have me!). If you get to England please give a call. We may get over sometime in October. Some wonderful things going on in the theatre just now. I have yet to see the tapes of our program as our machine was on the blink all summer. Love to you both, Grace.

The flight plan for an aircraft seized in Thailand with a load of illicit North Korean arms and ammunition shows that the mysterious plane was headed to Iran, a new report from arms trafficking researchers says.

According to the flight plan seen by researchers, the aircraft belonged to Georgia Air West was chartered by Hong Kong-based Union Top Management Ltd., or UTM, to fly oil industry spare parts from Pyongyang to Tehran, with several other stops, including in Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

Thai authorities, acting on a US tip, impounded the Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane when it made a scheduled refueling stop in Bangkok on Dec. 12, uncovering 35 tons of weapons, reportedly including explosives, rocket-propelled grenades and components for surface-to-air missiles. The plane's papers described its cargo as oil-drilling machinery for delivery to Sri Lanka.

The UN imposed sanctions in June banning North Korea from exporting any arms after the communist regime conducted a nuclear test and test-fired missiles. Impoverished North Korea is believed to earn hundreds of millions of dollars every year by selling missiles, missile parts and other weapons to countries such as Iran, Syria and Burma.

The report on the flight plan from the nonprofit groups TransArms in the United States and IPIS of Belgium was funded by the Belgian government and Amnesty International. It could not be independently verified.

The report says the plane was registered to Air West, a cargo transport company in the former Soviet republic of Georgia. Asked to comment on whether the plane was bound for Tehran, company owner Levan Kakabadze told The Associated Press that he was unaware of the plane's final destination.

Speaking by telephone from Batumi, Georgia, Kakabadze said that he had leased the plane to the SP Trading company and could bear no responsibility for what happened next.

The report also raises multiple questions, including why the plane would stop in Thailand, since arms traffickers would be wiser to fly over China toward the former Soviet republics and on to Iran, rather than the well-policed southeastern Asian country.

It says that the final flight plan shows that the aircraft stopped at an Azerbaijani air force base a few miles north of the capital, Baku, on its way to North Korea, and was expected to make a stop there on its way back from Pyongyang to Tehran.

A film about a remote hotel where not all is as it seems, a film featuring a lead best known for his quizzing prowess back in the day on a certain BBC light entertainment programme, and a film that's been a real passion project for all involved in front of and behind the camera. That film is of course, Ed Greenberg's directorial debut, psychological thriller The Renata Road.

For the uninitiated, in 2016 I was told of the project through a friend of a friend in a foyer of a local cinema, as the print was being tested on actual projection/sound equipment, and before long, I was invited to an early preview screening of the film to write the first review - since then the blog's been on the ride with the Beyond The Bar team, through the highs and the lows of taking an independently made, crowdfunded film from script to screen, something I've seen more in depth with the film production students I got to shadow back in 2018/19. Obviously we can't reveal too much about the plot beyond what went in that original review - this is a film that has twists and turns at its core, but since the Kickstarter backers seen it, we've been a key part of the journey here at TheJackSmit.com - so much so that we're featured in the international trailer. But today is a day I've been very, very, very excited for, purely because I get to type these words:

The Renata Road is now available on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.

Since we last updated you all on the film in 2022 following its world premiere in LA, and the subsequent US streaming release on Valentines Day last year, Richard Albiston and his team at The Cannon Film Company have worked their magic alongside Beyond The Bar to bring this film home, and with the folks at Burning Bulb, at long last the Renata is truly open for business. The film is out, it's real, and now, at last, audiences can see it with their trusty Prime subscriptions.

Reading through the press kit, the film's director says it best: "there’s been an increasing demand from the public these past years for more challenging content; for stories that make you think and look beyond the surface-level narrative. Films that inspire discussion and interpretation". I hope audiences understand it as well as the two packed cinema screens I seen it with during the search for a distributor - as I said back then, it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it is a distinctly Northern film that gets you talking. Which, in essence, is what a good film should do. But while today is a day of celebration, there is a small amount of sadness as it would be wrong not to mention a key part of the Renata family who isn't here to see the big day - in 2019 production designer, set builder and all round top man Craig Priestley lost his battle with cancer. I had the honour of meeting him in the summer of 2018, playing many board games with him, and quite rightly, the film is dedicated to his memory. If anything, the last few years covering this film has shown how much of a family this industry can create.
